Sunrise Bakery in Smethwick, Birmingham features in the book: ‘Mother Country: Real Stories of the Windrush Children’, a leading new exploration of the Windrush generation featuring David Lammy, Lenny Henry, Corinne Bailey Rae, Sharmaine Lovegrove, Hannah Lowe, Jamz Supernova, Natasha Gordon and Rikki Beadle-Blair.

Errol Drummond, Managing Director, Sunrise Bakery was interviewed for this book and shared stories of his father, Herman Drummond, the co-founder of Sunrise Bakery and the difficulties he surmounted to begin and establish a Black-owned business in Smethwick, Birmingham in 1966.

“Thanks to the growing number of Caribbean grocery stores, takeaways, clubs and shebeens, word about Drummond’s business soon spread beyond Birmingham’s predominantly black areas. After Errol took the reins of the business, he started targeting London; first he sold in corner shops and then, aiming high by winning contracts with a number of national supermarkets, the business exploded."
