At Sunrise Bakery, we’ve always been inspired by the rich heritage and the incredible stories that have shaped our journey as a family business. Today, we are thrilled to share a significant milestone achieved by our Managing Director, Errol Drummond, who has published his first book, Sea Grapes on Bluefields Beach: Searching for the Streets of Gold.
This heartfelt autobiography chronicles Errol’s journey from his humble beginnings in rural Jamaica to his pivotal role in the UK as a leader in the Caribbean food industry. Errol provides an intimate account of his life, blending personal memories with the broader historical context of the Windrush Generation—a group of Caribbean migrants who answered Britain’s call to help rebuild after the devastation of World War II.
In Sea Grapes on Bluefields Beach, Errol reflects on his early years in Westmoreland, Jamaica, and the challenges of adjusting to a new life in Birmingham, England, in the 1960s. He describes the stark contrasts between the carefree simplicity of his Jamaican childhood and the struggles of fitting into inner-city Birmingham as an immigrant child navigating a system designed to marginalise him. His story captures the resilience, ambition, and determination that defined the Windrush Generation and the generations that followed.
Errol’s journey also shines a light on the transformative power of hard work and dedication. From his early career with the Midland Electricity Board (MEB), which took him as far as Kuwait, to joining and eventually leading the family business, Sunrise Bakery, Errol’s story is a testament to his commitment to excellence and his love for Caribbean culture. As CEO of Sunrise Bakery, Errol has been instrumental in bringing Caribbean food to the forefront of British cuisine, ensuring it becomes an integral part of the UK’s diverse culinary landscape.
Beyond the bakery, Errol’s leadership extends to his work within the Jamaican diaspora. As chairman of Jamaican Heritage UK, he continues to champion the contributions of Caribbean people to British society.
Sea Grapes on Bluefields Beach is more than just a memoir; it’s a celebration of family, culture, and the enduring spirit of the Windrush Generation. Errol’s reflections offer readers a deeper understanding of the sacrifices and achievements of those who paved the way for future generations while providing inspiration for anyone striving to overcome challenges and create a meaningful legacy.
We are incredibly proud of Errol’s achievements and encourage everyone to read this powerful account of resilience, culture, and heritage. You can purchase Sea Grapes on Bluefields Beach on Amazon here.
Congratulations, Errol, on this incredible accomplishment. Thank you for sharing your story and inspiring so many with your journey!
